Our Pediatric Residents: PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, Chief Residents

Poneh Davoodi, MD Medical College of Georgia
I fell in love with the MUSC Pediatric Program, when I did my away rotation as a 4th year medical student. I had heard a lot of good things from my brother who was a surgery resident here, but had the chance to experience it for myself during that month. The staff, residents, nurses, and administration were so welcoming and approachable. During that rotation, everyone made me feel as if I was them. The residents and attendings work very hard, but at the same time, they try to get to know each other outside of the hospital. This program had everything i wanted in a program. It provides a solid fund of general pediatrics and subspecialty knowledge, diversity in patients and illnesses, provides opportunities for volunteer work and research, and has a warm working environment. Not to mention, Charleston is an absolutely beautiful city. There is nothing like spending your post-call days relaxing on the beach...

When looking at residencies, I wanted a program with a strong academic reputation yet a laid back atmosphere. I looked all over the country, but after all was said and done I felt like MUSC was the perfect fit. Plus, I was ready for a change of scenery and the beach, restaurants, and weather made Charleston as appealing of a place to live as anywhere.

With so many residency programs out there, I narrowed my search down to programs in a great location, with awesome people, in an academic setting. From the minute I arrived in Charleston and left my sweater in the car (in the balmy sea breezes of January) to the moment I stepped out of the hospital after the interview, I knew MUSC was a place that met and even exceeded all my expectations. The atmosphere is so supportive here; everyone wants everyone else to excel. The program has a good academic reputation, and the people at MUSC are some of the smartest, most hilarious people you'll ever meet. The beach is pretty fantastic too.

I chose MUSC because I was very impressed with the residents and staff that I interacted with on my interview day. They seemed to have a great relationship with each other and felt that would be a great fit for me. Another aspect of MUSC that I found very appealing is the fact that the entire medical center is located in the same general area in downtown Charleston so there is access to basically everything. Finally, what bad things can be said about Charleston? It's a great southern city right on the water and has proven to be a perfect fit that is not too far from home for a New Orleanian.

My husband and I love Charleston! We both went to medical school here, and we love the city and the people. During my time as a student, I loved coming to the children’s hospital. Everyone from the interns to the faculty seemed like they liked each other and that they enjoyed what they did.

To be honest, I first narrowed down my programs based on the weather. It had to be warm wherever I was going to end up. After visiting the majority of the well-respected programs in the south, MUSC rose to the top! It was the people here who I kept remembering. I felt comfortable with the residents and attendings that I met, and thought that there were the kinds of people I would like to work with, and hang out with over the next 3 years- they were fun, had great personalities and a broad range of interests. The reputation of the program, the city of Charleston, a fun program director and the international opportunities available at MUSC just sealed the deal!

I have to admit, MUSC first got my attention because of its location. Charleston is an amazing city, and has a little bit of everything. However, after doing a rotation here as a 4th year student I learned there was so much more this program had to offer than just its location. First of all, I was very impressed with how knowledgeable the 2nd year resident were. I knew that the program must have done an excellent job of educating them as interns in order for them to have the confidence and knowledge that they displayed. Second, I saw how happy all the residents were. I could tell that they really loved the program, and really enjoyed what they were doing. And most of all, I saw how well everyone got along, and helped each other out. I could tell the residents were not just colleague but friends. It really did feel like a family. The residents and attendings had a wonderful relationship with each other, and I witnessed how dedicated the attendings were to resident education. I knew I had to come to MUSC, and I couldn't be happier to be part of the pediatric residency program here.

I chose MUSC in part to be closer to my fiancée who is a pilot at Charleston AFB, but it was also important for me to find a place where I would receive excellent general pediatrics training while being surrounded with colleagues that I enjoyed working with. After doing a visiting rotation here in Peds ID as a fourth year med student, I knew MUSC would be a great fit for me. All of the residents and attendings are incredibly friendly, and the quality of teaching is superior to many other places that I interviewed. Plus, Charleston is a beautiful place to live, and I'm sure it will be nice to have snow-free winters after a lifetime of living in Wisconsin!

MUSC seemed to have everything I was looking for: a major free standing children's hospital staffed by a group of people who love to work and hang out together in a beautiful and fun city. Work is so much more enjoyable when your colleagues are your best friends. The program will make me an incredible general pediatrician able to take many different paths in my career. The people and the city will keep me balanced and allow me to get away from all of the work for a bit. Plus, who wouldn't want to work in a program run by Dr. Southgate after hearing the enthusiasm in his voice when he talks about the future of our program?

Of all the places I interviewed, MUSC hands down had the most dynamic group of residents and attendings. It was clear from my interview day that the people here are intelligent, hard working, genuine and fun. Everyone is very supportive of one another, so you never feel like you are alone. I was also very impressed with MUSC's morning report. They clearly put the time and effort into making each educational activity worthwhile. On top of that, it's hard to pass up a place where just as many attendings surf as residents! Now only if I can learn...

I chose MUSC because I felt like it was the perfect package for pediatric residency! From the moment I walked through the doors I felt comfortable and at home. The residents and faculty are excited to teach and learn and truly care about the pediatric patients here. The program actively listens to residents' ideas and responds with changes to improve the program. Growing up I spent a lot of time in Isle of Palms so I knew what an amazing city Charleston was and that it would be a great place to call home. My husband and I agreed that this was definitely where we wanted to be!
