Vision for Excellence

The Children's Research Institute (CRI) was created to strengthen children's research at MUSC. Our mission is to improve the lives of children, their families and communities by conducting high quality children's research by training superior physicians and scientists, and by fostering innovation through the sciences of discovery and application.

Our vision is to be a leading regional, national and international resource in children's research.

Our goals, in support of the CRI mission and vision, are to:
  • Empower talented MUSC scientists, physician researchers, and practitioners to improve child and adolescent health;

  • Promote inclusiveness and collaboration;

  • Identify and enable established investigators;

  • Identify and enable young or new investigators;

  • Increase and diversify funding for research; and

  • Optimize use of research space.
These goals will enable multidisciplinary and collaborative groups of scientists to employ innovative research strategies. Importantly, CRI will allow MUSC to attract and retain a critical mass of talented investigators. The specific strategies are as follows:
  1. 'Mine' MUSC for researchers in child and adolescent health, and identify strategic research priorities within current excellent programs in neuroscience, cardiobiology, nutrition and obesity, stem cell biology and cellular transplantation, genetic disorders, inflammation and organ protection, and pulmonary biology.

  2. Promote professional growth and productivity of investigators. Using current successful programs as models of excellence, CRI will harvest the intellectual capital and collective wisdom of the faculty to manage through participation, goal setting, and feedback.

  3. Enhance research productivity and significantly improve the ranking among US research programs. CRI will make optimal use of research space by assigning it to scientists that facilitate integration and cooperation within the Institute and at MUSC.

  4. Strongly support chairs to retain and recruit well-funded scientists who are conducting basic and applied children's research.

  5. Increase and diversify external funding to support the research mission. CRI will establish long-term partnerships with federal and state funding agencies, private foundations, and Industry.
