MUSC Researchers Studying How ADHD Meds Enter Brain

For adults and children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), sometimes finding the right medication is more difficult than getting diagnosed in the first place. Individual genetics also play a large role in how children and adults with ADHD will react to certain medications and doses, with side effects ranging from stomach ache to adverse cardiovascular reactions.

An MUSC study published in the Journal of Pediatrics November issue surveyed nearly 3,500 medical school graduates and found that while future pediatricians (particularly females) ranked caring for others as a top professional value, they ranked research, academic and teaching pursuits at the bottom of the values list.

Child-Size Heart Treatment Saves 5-Year-Old's Life

Doctors at MUSC used a new German-built heart pump called the Berlin Heart to keep 5-year-old Joseph Greenwood alive as he awaited a heart transplant. Although the Berlin Heart has been approved for use throughout Europe, it has yet to be cleared for use in the United States. The FDA does allow the Berlin Heart to be used in extreme emergencies, for what it calls "compassionate release." It was what Joseph's doctors and family hoped for.

Eligible participants will receive, at no charge, comprehensive educational, developmental, health and psychiatric evaluations. More Than $1.8 Million to Benefit MUSC Children's Hospital

On Saturday, June 3, MUSC Children's Hospital participated in its 23rd annual Children's Miracle Network Celebration Broadcast on WCSC TV-5. Hosted by on-air celebrities Bill Sharp and Debi Chard from the MUSC Harper Student Center, the CMN broadcast is held each year to thank national and local sponsors for their year round dedication to the hospital. More than $33,000 was raised in pledges during the ten hour event on Saturday. And more than $1.8 million was raised in 2005 through sponsor support of MUSC Children's Hospital.

The 2004 IOP Connector Run and Walk for the Child will be held Saturday, Oct. 2. All net proceeds from the event will go to support the local prevention of child abuse and other child related programs. The Run and Walk will start at 8 a.m. at the foot of the Connector on Palm Boulevard. You can pick up race packets at the Wild Wings on Coleman Boulevard on Thursday, September 30, and Friday October 1, from 5-8 p.m. Race day registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Isle of Palms Fire Station. Please note that the IOP Connector will close at 7:15 on race day and you must use the Ben Sawyer Bridge on Sullivan’s Island. Also, free parking is provided in the County Park on 14th Street and in the lot at front beach. Bumpin' for Babies tournament to benefit March of Dimes

Saturday June 26th at the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms. This charity event has collected more than $10,000 for the March of Dimes in the past. Each two man beach team raises money for the March of Dimes as their entry fee. The teams then compete for $1500 in cash prizes and plenty of sponsor donated merchandise. Publix provides lunch for the participants and Andolini's Pizza will provide pizzas for a late afternoon snack. Gatorade and water are provided throughout the day. Camp for Children with Burns

Camp 'Can' Do is a special camp just for children who have received serious burn injuries and the only camp of its kind in South Carolina. Children come from all over the state to join together for four fun-filled days at the beach. The camp is sponsored by SC Firefighters who support the special needs of burned children and MUSC Children's Hospital Pediatric Burn Center.
