Paul M. Darden, MD Paul M. Darden, MD
Dr. Darden is director of the General Pediatric Research Center and General Pediatric Research Group, professor of pediatrics (primary) and biometry and epidemiology (joint) and director of pediatric primary care (Pediatric Resident Continuity Clinic). He has been conducting university affiliated clinical trials since 1987. His numerous previous research interests involved polio vaccination protocols, immunization cost effectiveness, South Carolina Immunization Initiative Studies, and rotavirus immunization studies. His present research interests include: examining the provision of primary care to children, particularly extensive research into the delivery of immunization in practice-based settings, and secondary analysis of administrative and research databases. He has been the primary investigator on numerous pharmaceutical trials of vaccines, antibiotics and infant formulas.


William T. Basco, MD William T. Basco, MD
Dr. Basco, associate professor of pediatrics, has been a co-investigator and faculty member since 1997. He is a former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar, completing four years of research in the area of medical education, particularly the medical school admission process. Dr. Basco is the director of Frontiers in Pediatrics, MUSC Pediatric Department's yearly CME program aimed at general pediatricians and other practitioners caring for children. Dr. Basco currently serves as co-investigator on the Academic Generalist Fellowship Grant and the Academic Administrative Units (Title VII) Grant (both are general pediatric research group projects). In June 2006, Dr. Basco will begin four years of research funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, evaluating perscribing errors occurring in ambulatory pediatric visits.


Ronald J. Teufel, II, MD Ronald J. Teufel, II, MD
Dr. Teufel, assistant professor of pediatrics, has been a faculty member since 2004. He is a former Academic Generalist Fellow at MUSC. Dr. Teufel is co-director of the Pediatric Hospitalist section. Clinical interests include the care of hospitalized children and research interests are focused on hospital based quality improvement efforts for pediatric asthma.

J. Routt Reigart, MD J. Routt Reigart, MD
Dr. Reigart, general pediatrics director, has conducted university affiliated clinical trials since 1971 and is professor of pediatrics at MUSC. His special research interests include children's environmental health issues, general pediatrics, and toxicology (lead poisoning prevention and education activities since 1972; state wide screening initiatives since 1975; CDC chair for the Childhood Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee, and the USEPA chair for the Children's Health Protection Advisory Committee; member of USEPA/USDA/Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee and the FIFRA Science Advisory Panel).


Andrea P. Summer, MD Andrea P. Summer, MD
Dr. Andrea Summer, assistant professor of pediatrics and director of the MUSC International Adoption Clinic, completed the academic generalist fellowship at MUSC in 2002. In addition to founding and conducting the International Adoption Clinic, Dr. Summer also participates in the MUSC Travel Medicine Clinic. She has organized and directs an interdisciplinary course in international health. Her research interests include medical and developmental issues of internationally adopted children and evaluating the effects of water and sanitation interventions on child growth in developing countries.

Dr. Robers, associate professor of pediatrics, has been conducting clinical research since 1996. His special research interests include children's environmental health hazards and the management of lead toxicity in children.

Sarah Prim, general pediatrics clinical research coordinator, has been a registered nurse for over 20 years with a special interest in pediatrics. Through her nursing profession and travels as a military spouse she has worked with children from many diverse areas.
