Family Literacy Program
Who We Are
The Family Literacy Program is a free service provided to families that reside in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties. The
essence of the program is that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. We work with individuals
and families by combining the four components of family literacy to create a comprehensive program.
Trident United Way (TUW) has been a strong advocate and funding partner for the Family Literacy Program. TUW also provides other community based events and services that can be found by visiting www.tuw.org.
What We Do
Family literacy services helps families prepare children for success in school in many ways:
- Reading, writing & play activities between parents and their children
- Information for parents about child development and early learning
- Education for adults to improve reading and other job-related skills
- Fun activities for children to learn letters, shapes, numbers, colors and more
The Family Literacy Program provides a variety of activities that parents and children engage in together to improve pre-reading skills, increase vocabulary and encourage conversation.
Start Early!
(2-4 years old)
Using toys, books, music and games we:
- Model reading aloud and storytelling
- Promote listening and language skills
- Encourage creativity and imagination
- Enhance motor and thinking skills
Parent & Child Time
Our Play Space helps parents to encourage their children's curiosity and creativity:
- Builds their brain power
- Helps them learn language
- Prepares them to be readers
- Creates a special time together
Resources for Parents: Adult Literacy Services
Our goal is to give every parent basic strategies for including books and reading in their child's day. At every visit, children receive a FREE book. Parents also get resources and activity guides at every visit.
Triple P
Parenting education program that gives parents tools to help understand and manage children's behavior.
Motheread
Individual sessions for parents combine literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
Parenting Support Group
Parents may join our free ongoing support group that meets weekly to talk about the issues of raising our children.
Referrals
As needed, families are connected with local agencies that provide the following types of services:
- ESL (English as a Second Language) classes
- GED preparation
- Parenting support hom-visits and job skills training
