International Adoption Clinic
Our clinic specializes in comprehensive medical and developmental evaluations for internationally adopted
children.
Adopting a child from another country is an exciting process. While most internationally
adopted children do very well, they may initially face unique medical, developmental and behavioral issues not
typically seen in children in the United States. The recognition and early intervention
of these issues may improve your child’s transition into his or her new home.
Through the International Adoption Clinic at MUSC we will work with you to promote the
health and development of your newly adopted child as he or she adjusts to a new
environment.
Our clinic offers a multi-disciplinary team of specialists including a pediatrician
with expertise in international medicine and a developmental pediatrician. As part of the MUSC
Children’s Hospital, experts in every pediatric subspeciality including gastroenterology,
neurology, infectious diseases, psychology, occupational and physical therapy are readily
available. Our goal is to identify and treat nutritional, infectious, developmental, and
behavioral conditions so that your newly adopted child can reach his or her full
potential.
Our services include:
- Pre-adoption consultation of medical records, videotapes, and/or photographs
- Post-adoption comprehensive medical, developmental, and behavioral evaluation
- The referral and coordination of care for specialized services when needed
- Long-term follow-up and tracking of health and behavioral issues
- Education and support for families addressing the complex medical and behavioral issues often encountered in children adopted internationally
